The Ridgeway 16k - Avebury to Ogbourne St George

I have an idea for a fun day out for the Berkshire Trail Runners...

Avebury to Ogbourne st George via the Ridgeway: 16.8km with an elevation gain of 161m. Possible away run for April / May? Any thoughts anyone?

Cars would need to be place at Ogbourne St George (nr A346) for return to Avebury, and possibly Barbury Castle Car park @ 10K (for safety). Driving time from either Barbury Castle or Ogbourne St George to Avebury is approx 18 min.

Logistically we would need to meet initially at Ogbourne SG to drop off one or more cars, (depending on the number of cars and runners) and then proceed onto Avebury for the start.

For safety each runner should carry a backpack with 2L of water, wind / waterproofs, extra layers and a fully charged phone. You may also consider leaving a “recovery pack” containing water and energy bars / snacks in the vehicle(s) left at Ogbourne St George to refuel at the end.

The route is largely through open country away from civilization (yipee), however we do cross a road at 6.7k (chalk white horse) and pass by the Barbury castle car park at 9.4k should we incur any injuries. It will then be a short drive back to Avebury 10 miles for drinks and food at the Red Lion within the Avebury stone circle!

Would a sat or Sunday around 6th/7th or 20th/21st work?

Wouldn't be able to do either of those personally (that goes for Dean too) as we're already away on the 6/7 with the triathlon club and it's my mum's 70th birthday celebrations on the 20/21. The weekends in-between we have the kids :(

Pat the 20/21 clashes with the Snowdon push maybe in May or July if we hydrate the hotter month's shouldn't make that much difference ?

If we can make this work I will just have to pick a date and hope it suits as many as possible. Rather do it sooner rather than later as we may be able to do more outings later in the year.

I’d be interested depending on date

Have always wanted to do a Rideway run so yes up for it

Interested too depending on the date :)

Free most weekends I think in April if that helps Patrick?

  • Sent via email anyone interested?... Hi, I am a member of a community sports club, South London Orienteers who organise three great races on Surrey Hills, near Dorking on 9th June (Pre-entry £8.00). The races are 6 miles (10K), 10 miles (16K) and 18 miles (29K). We think these might appeal to those who enjoy running and trail running. Run under FRA rules. Mostly varied trails and tracks, timing check points. Competitors get a map of each race with the check points marked, there is free parking, indoor changing and showers, water stations, timing chips given out, and finally each person who completes the race will get a unique birch-wood medal etched with a picture of Leith Hill Tower, it is a lovely memento. All the information is on the South London Orienteering website and we have also made a video of the Ten Mile race to help people with route choice; the video is on South London Orienteers Youtube Channel https://youtu.be/CYm2oksti2M There is a chance (just!) for anyone who is interested to 'learn' the route with us on Saturday 11th May, but they do need to contact me if interested. I wonder if you would mind send this information around your members as they might want to try something new. We welcome groups and people who want to run together. Thanks Sarah Brown http://slow.org.uk/events/surrey-hills-race-2019/
  • A request was made to pass this on... Message: Hi I just wanted to let you and your Runners know about the Binfield 10k race taking place on 19th May. There are still places left and 100% of the profits go to charity. This year we are supporting Youthline. I would be really grateful if you could spread the word! Thanks Selina www.binfield10k.co.uk
